Information on the municipality

Leppävirta is situated in the region of Northern Savo, in the Province of Eastern Finland,
Along road 5 and the Saimaa deep-water channel. Savo is the very place where you find the most cunning finns, they say. We take it as a compliment.

The distance from the parish village of Leppävirta to Kuopio is 52 km and to Varkaus 24 km. Most of the Soisalo Island, Finland’s biggest island, belongs to Leppävirta.

The parish of Leppävirta was established in 1639. Before that it belonged to the Tavisalmi administrative parish, which covered the entire region of what is currently known as Northern Savo.

The beautiful Leppävirta route attracted hunters and fishermen as early as in the 14th century. The same route continues to serve both freight and passenger transport to the Gulf of Finland through the Saimaa Canal.

Area:
1,519 km², of which 383 km² is water; 2,250 km of shorelines. Population density: 9,4 people per 1 km² of land (in 2009).

Size of population:
On 31 December 2009, Leppävirta had a population of 10 633 people. The biggest centres of population are the parish village (4 329), Sorsakoski (940), Timola (552), Paukarlahti (603) and Oravikoski (348).
